Is it worth having something re-upholstered, rather than buying new?
There is a misconception, that having a piece of furniture recovered will cost you more than having it replaced. This could be further from truth.
If the piece you are going to replace was quality made, and the new replacement furnishing is of "equal" or "higher quality", than you will more than likely pay more to purchase new than it would cost to have the old piece recovered.
The key words in the above sentence is "equal" and "higher quality", for not all furniture are created equal, nor are all furnishings worth recovering.
To prove my point, I browsed a few of the local furniture stores who are known for selling "high quality" furniture. In particular, I visited Ethan Allen, Thomasville and De Boer's.
The only criteria I had in doing my research was to compare "apples-to-apples", and look at what it would cost to purchase two pieces of traditional furniture.
The two furniture styles I sought to compare were a traditional wing chair, and a traditional 3-seater sofa. Below are two photos of what I would consider a traditional sofa and wing chair.
| Traditional Wing Chair |
 |
A "traditional wing chair" sold between $1189.00 & $2239.00 (plus taxes and shipping) at Ethan Allen, Thomasville and De Boer's.
Having your existing wing chair recovered at AMP Upholstery, in comparable fabric, would only cost you approximately $600.00 (plus taxes and shipping).
That is a MINIMUM savings of $590!

Traditional Sofa

A "traditional sofa" sold between $2400.00 & $3349.00 (plus taxes and shipping) at Ethan Allen, Thomasville and De Boer's.
Having your existing sofa recovered at AMP Upholstery, in a comparable fabric, would only cost you approximately $1250.00 (plus taxes and shipping).
That is a MINIMUM savings of at least $1150!!
So why have your furniture re-upholstered?
As you can see, having a furnishing recovered doesn't automatically mean you will be paying hundreds or thousands of dollars more than it would cost you to buy new. In most cases, you will actually save money having your piece recovered. The other benefits include:
-
- choosing a custom fabric which suits your decor,
-
- you can also upgrade your seat foam, or replace it with down fill,
-
- if applicable you can...
-
- change the style of the arms,
-
- change the shape or style of the cushions,
-
- add new legs,
-
- add a skirt (or remove one),
-
- add decorative tacking,
-
- etc, etc!
-
- and lastly, you can save your sofa or wing chair from ending up in the landfill!
